Behavioral Presentation

I went through 5 interviews in just one week: first a recruiter call, then 3 manager interviews from different departments, and finally an assessment/presentation. After that, they did a reference check, which I thought was the last step before an offer. Even though I thought the interviews went great, I didn't get the job. What really got me frustrated was how much time they wanted me to commit to interviews, and then the endless waiting because HR needed to check with the CEO about the budget for the role.

A recruiter reached out on Nov 12, 2024, for a Staff SWE role. Had a good initial call, then an interview with the hiring manager on Nov 22, 2024. This was followed by several technical rounds with team members and a final chat over the next few weeks. I was kept informed about the team, product, and culture. Then, after references cleared, I had another technical interview on Dec 19, 2024, which felt odd. On Dec 20, 2024, salary and benefits were discussed, and I was told an offer would come the next day. Instead, I got a rejection saying a new Head of Engineering is joining in Jan and the role would be revisited next year. This communication could have happened sooner and felt like a waste of time. The engineering team was great, but upper management's hiring process lacked clarity and professionalism.

The interview process was quite involved, starting with a required take-home assignment. While they suggested it would take about 3–4 hours, it was implied that more time, around 4-5 times that, would actually be needed. After that, I received a verbal offer with the compensation details, and they even conducted reference checks which seemed to go well. However, over the weekend, the CEO, who is quite micro-managey, suddenly rescinded the offer for reasons that weren't made clear. The recruiter and the hiring team were also surprised by this decision. Looking back, the negative reviews about the CEO on Glassdoor seem accurate, and I guess I ended up avoiding a bad situation.

I got contacted by the recruiter for the ML Engineering role at Overjet and we had a first call to discuss my background. She also gave me an overview of the company and the interview steps. The recruiter was super helpful and supportive, making sure I knew everything I needed to prepare. After that, I interviewed with the hiring manager, which was also good. We talked in detail about one of my projects, going over technical aspects, and I was asked a system design question. It was a good conversation, letting me share my experiences and understand what the team is trying to achieve and what the role involves. The whole process was organized well, and both the recruiter and hiring manager made me feel comfortable and valued.
