First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at OSIsoft.
Engineer
I talked to a recruiter at a career fair who seemed to really like my understanding of the company. She then arranged for me to fly out to Philadelphia, which was great since that's where I wanted to be. They put me up in a really nice hotel that was an easy walk to the OSIsoft office. The whole thing was about 4 hours with 4 different people interviewing me. First, I met with HR and got a packet of company info to read. Then, the first interviewer came in and asked me all sorts of puzzle questions, nothing really engineering-specific except for one coding question where I had to write code on a whiteboard to calculate factorials. One puzzle involved physics: 'how can you find the weight of this car when the only tool you have is a ruler?'. Another was a cake-cutting problem: 'if you could only make 3 slices in a birthday cake, how would you make them and create 8 equal sized pieces WITH EQUAL AMOUNTS OF ICING on each one?'. There was also a scale puzzle: '9 balls look the same and feel the same, but one is slightly heavier and you are only given one traditional see-saw scale, how can you tell which is the heavy ball with only being able to use the scale 2 times?'. After that, I spoke with a manager in technical support who asked me general questions about my background. Then, a PhD interviewer discussed my resume and had me fix a computer issue where the OSIsoft website wouldn't load by editing the Windows host file. Finally, the HR person I met at the beginning spoke with me again about my resume and asked more general questions, like why I was interested in OSIsoft.
- How might you determine the weight of a car if your only available tool is a ruler?
Engineer
I applied online and then got a phone interview, which I did. Then they set up and did an in-person interview. After that, I got an offer and had 30 days to accept. The in-person part had me talking to five people from different teams. Everyone I met was nice, welcoming, professional, and real. They liked it when you had different interests and hobbies outside of work. Everyone else I met there was also nice, welcoming, professional, and down-to-earth.
- Can you solve this hypothetical plant-setting problem on the spot?
Engineer
The interview process was quite demanding. I was interviewed by more than four people throughout the day, and they all approached the interviews from different perspectives. Some were focused on my technical background, while others provided general information about the company. I left with a positive view of the company, but I'm not sure if I'll get the job. Many of the current employees have PhDs in Chemical Engineering from top universities.
- You have to program the solution to get hired for the test for incoming engineers.
