First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at OppFi.
Software Engineer
Had an initial Zoom call for introductions. A few days later, I went through the technical interview, which was a Zoom call with 2 engineers and an online coding app that took 1.5 hours. The next day, the recruiter let me know OppFi passed. The whole thing took a few weeks. TIPS: The online coding app had issues on Mac with Chrome/Safari, so be ready to adapt. Pay attention to engineer feedback/help during the interview and acknowledge it, as colleague interaction and communication seem really important for this role. They value object-oriented design heavily, so really lean into OO, even if it's a bit much for the question, and mention other considerations like unit testing, integration testing, and mockups. If you have time, show off with functional programming.
- Could you implement a game scoring algorithm based on the provided flag-gathering game rules and skeleton code, covering both Scottish and Welsh scoring variations?
Software Engineer
I applied online and then had a phone screen with the hiring manager about a week later. They asked a question similar to fizz-buzz. Then, about a week after that, I went on-site for a bunch of interviews. The first part was talking about my background and the company. Then, I had to model a popular board game as a program. After that, I chatted with some product managers. Next, there was a coding challenge. Then, I chatted with the hiring manager to ask any questions I had. Finally, I discussed and did DB modeling with the CTO. The first four sessions were with two employees, and they made me feel pretty comfortable and answered my questions well.

This SWE2 process was pretty long. After the HM call, each interview had 2 people. First was the HM call (30 min). Then a "pair programming" session (45 min). It was weird, I had 30 min to code a game but wasn't typing. The other guy didn't know JS, and kept interrupting. Next, a 75 min front-end deep dive, which was great, the interviewers were cool. Then a 45 min system design, also a bit awkward, I explained and someone else diagrammed. Got a generic rejection email after all that. If I had passed, I would've had another 30-60 min with the director and HM. Pretty bad experience overall.
- Can you implement a game named Calvin Ball?
