First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at OpenTable.
Sales Representative
I had a first call with a recruiter where we talked about my background and more details about the job. It went well since my last role was similar to this one. After that, I had a Google Hangout with the sales manager, but his boss joined instead because something came up. I thought it was great, maybe I could skip a step! That call was about 45 minutes and went really well, but he still wanted me to talk to the original manager. A few days later, we had that Google Hangout, which also went well. I liked how transparent they both were. They both told me their main concern for me in the role and asked how I would overcome it (I didn't live in the area at the time, so they asked how I'd get familiar with the territory). They also asked how I'd handle actual objections that reps in the role face daily. In the last interview, they asked about my interview status with other companies, so I told them about another offer I got that morning but that OpenTable was my top choice. I haven't heard back since. I emailed the recruiter for an update, but nothing, not even a rejection. That was 20 days ago.
- How would you approach a restaurant owner who says they've been contacted multiple times by our company's reps and are already familiar with the services?
Sales
In the getting-to-know-you phase, the participants introduce themselves to each other. You as an applicant can practice this little self-presentation very well beforehand. In this phase of the conversation, the company and its products and services are then presented to the applicant. Often the desired position with its tasks is also outlined and shown what position the job holds in the company. Here you should listen carefully and take notes if necessary to be able to ask questions later. However, it can also be the case that the applicant is asked what he or she already knows about the company, its products/services and the business field, or how he or she imagines the job and the tasks. In this way, employers test how well the candidates have prepared for the conversation. Detailed information about the company can (usually) be found on the homepage, on company profiles and in media reports.
- Can you describe your approach to closing a sale?
Inside Sales Representative
I was referred by an employee and was really excited about working at OpenTable. However, it seems they use a recruiting company that needs improvement. Initially, I spoke with the recruiter and was told the Hiring Manager would reach out, with instructions to contact her if I didn't hear back in 2 days. A week passed with no contact, so I emailed the recruiter. She was out of the office, but the next day she emailed me back, and we spoke on the phone. She asked a few more questions and mentioned the Hiring Manager wanted me to update my resume as they didn't understand it. The recruiter apologized for the delay, blaming her absence, and assured me she'd inform the Hiring Managers. She also stated I was the best candidate. Again, I waited days with no word. I emailed the recruiter twice without any response. Then, I received a rejection. When I asked why, the recruiter blamed me, claiming I never responded to her, and that OpenTable had to move forward. This has left a really bad impression. Why wouldn't someone actively seeking a job respond, especially when the role seemed perfect?
