First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at OpenTable.
Product Manager
First, a recruiter screens you to talk about the role. Then, the hiring manager asks questions about the role and you introduce yourself. Next, there's a product deep dive with senior PMs where you talk about a product you've worked on. After that, it's a round robin with designers, engineers, and product people. A second HM call might happen if more time is needed.
- Can you tell me about a product or feature you recently launched?
Associate Product Manager
The interview process was really organized, with five steps: first, an HR chat, then a deep dive with the hiring manager, followed by a take-home task. After that, there was a panel presentation, and finally, one-on-one chats with the team. Even though it sounds like a lot, they made it feel comfortable. Emily I. from HR kept me in the loop the whole time. It showed me what OpenTable is all about.
- Tell me about a product you really like and why.
- What suggestions do you have for improving it?
Principal Product Manager
Had a decent phone screen and first interview. They asked for my availability for another interview, and I gave it, thinking it'd be about an hour with someone else. But on Thursday afternoon, they scheduled me for 8 hours of interviews on Monday and Tuesday, which included a task and a case study. I didn't get the case study brief or task details until later that day (Friday morning my time), so I had to prep everything over the weekend. Then I did the presentation interview and the whole 8 hours of interviews. Some interviews were good, others were just okay. I asked in the final interview if there were any red flags and was told no, with 'no doubts' about me for the role. Then it went silent for weeks. I followed up a couple of times and heard they were still interviewing. After 4 weeks, I followed up one last time, knowing it wouldn't be good news, and was told they weren't offering and were still interviewing. It was incredibly frustrating to put in over 20 hours of work on short notice, only to be ignored for 4 weeks and then rejected after multiple follow-up emails. I really wish companies that ask for so much from candidates would consider the mental toll of not responding because it's really disruptive, frustrating, and upsetting. Getting rejected is fine, but ignoring candidates who give you so much is not.
- How would you go about executing an idea?
