Software Engineer
Applied via an external recruitment firm, LHH. Initial screening by recruiters who seemed unfamiliar with the role's requirements. After that, there was a four-week silence. Then came a coding and system design interview. The people were nice, but it was unexpected that they didn't have a coding environment or a system design board ready, so I had to improvise. This wasn't communicated beforehand. The final interview involved two other interviewers. One was alright, but the other was a very cocky, poker-faced, know-it-all who seemed to feed off others' emotions. They mainly delved into my previous work experience and asked fundamental questions about software development.
- Could you demonstrate how to implement a randomized set with O(1) time complexity?
- Can you walk me through your previous experiences?
- What are your views on fundamental software development concepts?
Software Developer
The interview process spanned two weeks. The first week included an HR recruiter chat followed by a coding assessment that felt much longer than expected, with an expectation of 60-90 minutes but likely taking 3+ hours for a detailed submission. The second week was a packed team interview day, featuring two separate technical interviews with the team, concluding with a manager's interview. Although I didn't get an offer, I received feedback. A significant concern was the instruction: 'Salary should not be discussed with the team but with the TA partner at KAR.' My attempt to ask the team about salary, benefits, cost of living, and raises was met with what seemed like a company culture at KAR that discourages employees from discussing their compensation.
- Can you explain the distinction between an interface and an abstract class, and how this relates to the coding challenge?
- How does the difference between an interface and an abstract class apply to the coding challenge?
Software Engineer
So the first round is like a LeetCode problem, pair programming style with some team members, and then we discuss the solution and its time and space complexity. The second round is a more open-ended discussion about your background, which can be a bit tricky since you might not be sure what they're really looking for.
- Can you explain the time and space complexity of your technical solution?
- Tell me about your experience.
