Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Opendoor.
Talent Acquisition
The process began with a recruiter screen, followed by a hiring manager screen. The final round consisted of four 1:1 interviews. The recruiter was really thorough about the company, the process, and the vision. The final interviews had particular focus areas and were interactive. There was a final 'sell' call with a leader to get support. It felt like a very inclusive process.
- Given a scarcity of candidates for a specific role (X), what would be your sourcing strategy, including target companies?
- How do you approach selling a company to a potential candidate?
- What strategies would you employ to find candidates for a challenging role with a limited talent pool, and which companies would you identify as potential sources?
Director of Talent Acquisition
I got an InMail from someone on the People Team about a Head of Talent role. I was passive then, but took the call to learn more about Opendoor. After talking to the search lead, I wasn't feeling it initially, but Opendoor stuck with me. A few months later, my situation changed and I reached out again. Turns out they'd paused the search and hired a VP of HR instead. Disappointing, but I figured it was the right call for them. So far, nothing weird about the process. Then things got really strange. I suggested grabbing coffee to network since our industry is so small, and I thought I could help with their VP of HR search since I'd hired one at my current company. But the Opendoor rep kept rescheduling our coffee meeting for about a month, like 5 or 6 times. I tried to be understanding, but after they rescheduled this morning an hour before we were supposed to meet, I decided they didn't deserve my time. It was one of the worst professional interactions I've ever had. Their excuses were 'things are a mess here for me personally' and 'trying to juggle too many pieces.' My advice to Opendoor's recruiting team: if you're too swamped to meet, just say no politely.

Recruiter
I interviewed with a recruiter and the feedback during was great! He said I’d be moving forward to interview with the hiring manager. Also said to reach out to him if any other offers came through for me because he’d speed up the process to try and compete. At the end of the call he asked me to e-mail him my full availability for the next week and he’d get me scheduled. I sent my availability, after 4 days I had heard nothing, so I followed up with another e-mail. To this day (about a month since our interview) I have heard nothing and the position is no longer posted.
