Behavioral Technical Case

The interview process was incredibly long, taking about 3 months from start to finish. It also felt a bit disorganized, as HR didn't seem totally clear on new office openings or which roles were filled. I was interviewing for a GM role in Minneapolis, a market they planned to enter. I've been in the property flipping business, similar to Opendoor's model, for nearly 20 years and scaled it nationally. I had 5 phone interviews in total: 2 with HR and 3 with operations/management. The operations interviews included case study style questions focused on analytics, people management, and general operations. One interviewer, an attorney in operations, was late and difficult to understand due to speaking on speakerphone with an accent, and seemed unfamiliar with basic operational questions. She also appeared defensive when receiving feedback. I later found her online profile didn't seem fitting for a national real estate company role. It was also strange that the job posting required an Engineering or Economics degree for a GM role, given my extensive real estate background. The company's employees generally seemed young and lacked prior real estate experience, which I thought could be a challenge given their high-risk business model. I suspected that the interviews might have been less about hiring and more about gathering insights from industry experts on their operational challenges, like free focus groups. By the later interviews, I had doubts about their market entry plans, timeline, and overall viability due to their apparent disorganization and the operational issues they shared.

I had a phone screen with a recruiter that was about 30 minutes long. They only asked me about KPIs in my current job, not my background. They said they'd respond the next week but I didn't hear back for two weeks, even after emailing. I figured they weren't moving forward. Then, three weeks later, they emailed on Sunday night to schedule a 45-minute interview for the next night. I made it work and prepped, but they called 15 minutes late and told me they were going in a different direction. It's disrespectful to make senior candidates prep for last-minute interviews when they don't plan to interview them, especially for a new company.

Behavioral Other

This was the worst interview process I've ever experienced, and I'm not exaggerating. The recruiters messed up my name and the role I applied for. There were also many reschedules and the process felt repetitive. To top it off, the person in charge of the operations team acted very unprofessionally. It was obvious this was a team I wouldn't want to work with, even though the company's mission is cool and I didn't want to waste my time.
