Had a quick phone call about 2-3 days after applying. It was a 15-minute call about my background and skills. They were insistent on knowing my current salary, even when I was hesitant to share, and said they couldn't proceed without it, which felt unprofessional, worse than most agencies. They didn't seem to care about my questions or interest, asking if I could learn various programming languages, indicating they want a versatile engineer. After that initial call, I spoke with an engineer lead who asked some technical questions, about my background, and some scenario-based questions. This call lasted over an hour, longer than initially stated. They waited a week to get back to me, claiming they were waiting for other applicants, which seemed like a poor excuse. Based on company reviews, I suspect they don't offer competitive salaries, as the first person tried to negotiate my minimum expectations, creating an awkward situation. Be prepared for potentially below-market offers if you receive one.

I applied on LinkedIn and the recruiter reached out. The process was quick and the recruiter was very responsive. There were 4 interview rounds. First was with the hiring manager, we had a casual chat about my experience and they asked some STAR-based questions. Then, I had a choice between a take-home test or online assessments, and I chose the take-home test, which involved building a Game of chance app in React. After that, I had a coding review with two engineers who were nice; we discussed my general approach to problem-solving and how to optimize React app performance. The final round was a cultural fit interview with another lead engineer, focusing more on my experience and casual conversation. The recruiter later informed me the process was complete and I should expect an offer letter soon. However, after a few days, he stated that due to internal company changes, the offer was canceled. It felt strange after investing so much time. I suspect it was due to salary expectations, as I still see many similar roles open. The recruiter should have communicated the company's salary expectations upfront to avoid this wasted time. It's a shame because the recruiter was a good person and responsive to questions, and I don't think the final decision was theirs.

  • The Game of Shells involves a flat surface, a row of three small containers, and a ball small enough to fit under each. During each turn, the ball is placed under one container, and then the containers are shuffled randomly. To win, the player must guess the correct container; otherwise, they lose.
  • What are your thoughts on a game like the Game of Shells, where a ball is hidden under one of three containers that are then shuffled randomly, and the player must guess its location?

First I had a call with the recruiter, we talked about my background and they gave me a lot of details on the company and how the interviews would go. Then I met with the Eng. Manager, I shared my background and they told me more about the role. They then asked me some quick questions about my past work and the stack on my CV, and I got to ask some questions. After that, it was a system design interview with some team members. We spent an hour working on a system that met the requirements they laid out. I explained my thoughts and concerns as I worked on it, and they were able to keep up. After I finished, they gave me some new requirements to update the design. I got to ask some questions before we wrapped up. Lastly, I had a cultural fit interview with the Sr. Director, where they asked about my work and communication style, and how company values impacted me. I also had time for questions at the end. The recruiter was great, getting back to me after each meeting with feedback and what the next steps were. It felt like a really well-thought-out process.
