Merchandising Manager
I was initially contacted by the store's GM, and then the HR manager followed up to schedule an in-person interview. The interview lasted almost two hours and was a deep dive into my past work experiences, what I enjoyed and learned, my leadership approach, and my career aspirations. The GM then outlined the job duties and expectations, and we discussed hypothetical situations. The last 20-30 minutes were dedicated to company benefits and future plans. The GM shared her positive experience working there, and we both felt it was a good fit. She mentioned she'd contact me later that day. In the evening, she called with a complete offer including salary, benefits, and start date details. I was a bit surprised not to interview with the District Manager or another GM, but I understand that GMs are senior leaders whose hiring decisions are often trusted without further steps.
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- What do you consider your greatest strength as a leader?
- Are there any areas you feel you need to improve upon as a leader?
Merchandising Manager
Got a token interview for the Merchandising Manager job at the main store in downtown SF. Knew it was a long shot when the interviewer, maybe the store manager, barely looked at me and seemed totally distracted by everything else happening on the sales floor where we were talking. They didn't really absorb much of what I said, asking questions I'd already answered. The only time they seemed engaged was when I asked about them, and they talked about moving from the east coast and how pricey SF is. I'm guessing, like some places, it was just a formality and they already had internal folks in mind. I just hope they can at least fake it better next time and not make it so darn awkward.
- Can you share an experience of working as part of a team?
- Describe a time you helped an employee develop their skills.
Merchandising Manager
The interview process was really bad. It took like 4 months of interviews before they offered me a job. The store manager was cool and so was the area merchandise manager. The DM back then didn't even pay attention, like he didn't care.
