Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at OfficeMax.
Customer Service Representative
The interview process was very thoughtful and effectively assessed candidates. It was great that I met a lot of the team and participated in different activities with various people. The tour was a particular highlight. The strong culture was evident throughout the entire interview experience.
- Could you share one of your weaknesses?
Customer Service Associate
The interview was pretty simple. An assistant manager from another store conducted the interviews because our store was really short-staffed. He was super friendly and relaxed. He asked the typical questions, such as why I wanted to work for Office Max, what I could contribute to the team, and my salary expectations. I then shared information about myself, answered his questions, and asked a few of my own. After that, he asked me to pick an item in the store and try to sell it to him. I did, and he seemed to like my approach. He mentioned he'd contact me soon regarding my status for the position. He called a few days later with an offer, noting he could secure a higher salary due to my age and experience. I accepted, and I started working.
- What value would you add to our team?
Customer Service Representative
The hiring process with OfficeMax started with the usual online application, which required creating a username and password for their Taleo X system. I had to fill out an application with information already on my resume. After submitting, there was a long wait of about a month before the Store Manager (SM) called to schedule an interview. The interview itself involved waiting in a crowded room for 30 minutes, then being moved to a small, cold room to complete a paper version of the application again. This was followed by the 'Angelic Test', which included questions like 'Would you tell if your friend and coworker steals?' and 'Will you steal paper clips?'. Finally, there was a face-to-face interview where I had to explain my application. I was told I was a strong candidate and would be contacted the next day with a decision and information about drug testing if it was positive. The next day, I didn't hear back, so I called and left a message. After waiting through the weekend, I called again on Monday and was told a decision hadn't been reached but I was at the top of the list, with a deadline of Wednesday to hear back or the position would be filled. By Wednesday at 4:00 PM, I still hadn't heard, so I called to thank them for the opportunity and was surprisingly offered the job. However, the SM mentioned he was still waiting on background check and drug testing information and would call the following day with details. I never heard back from the Store Manager and eventually gave up, returning to online applications. This description isn't meant negatively but reflects my confusion.
