First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Office of Senator Charles E. Schumer.
Intern
I had 2 interviews, scheduled a few days apart. Both were very short, under 15 minutes. Exactly one week later, I found out I got the internship. The interviewers were really nice. The whole process was quite drawn out though, as I applied in February and didn't hear back about an interview until May, so it's probably a good idea to have other options lined up. They asked pretty standard questions.
- Could you tell me about yourself, and what your motivations are for seeking this internship, particularly your interest in politics?
- What is your understanding of the senator's positions, and where do your own views align or diverge? Additionally, what do you identify as the most significant challenges confronting New York City?
- Describe a situation where you might have a disagreement with a coworker. How would you manage that?
Intern
First, I had to submit a writing sample, resume, and cover letter. Then, I interviewed with the NYC coordinator. It was a thorough and informative conversation that gave me a good idea of the internship's workload. The interview covered various topics to see if I'd be a good fit for the whole operation, as working with others is a key part of this program.
- Could you explain what aspects of the Senator's legislative operations capture your interest and the reasons behind it?
Intern
I applied online, and then after a long while, I got a response (the application was through a program, so it was different). After that, I had a video call interview that lasted about 30 minutes.
- What's a policy you disagreed with, and why?
- What's a policy you agreed with, and why?
- What issues are you passionate about?
