Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Ocean State Job Lot.
Store Manager
I met with the District Manager, the Director of HR, and the Regional Director. It felt intimidating initially, but they were really nice and helped me feel at ease. The questions were direct and quite detailed.
- Could you describe a typical day in your previous role as a manager?
Store Manager
Got a call in the early afternoon and managed to schedule an interview for the same day. Upon arrival at the recruiting center, I met with a recruiter who then brought in the Store Manager for a one-on-one chat. We discussed past experiences and how I've handled various situations. They also asked if I had any criminal convictions or arrests, to which I answered no. Afterward, I was referred to the District Manager, who mentioned a corporate recruiter would reach out to set up another interview with him. Update*** Still no word after 3 weeks. Seems like they don't value long-term commitment, experience, or dedication from a top performer. Didn't even get a courtesy email.
- What makes you the better candidate compared to someone else?
Store Manager
So, first, they post the job, and you send in your stuff. Then, someone looks at your resume to see if you're a good fit. After that, there's a quick chat, either phone or video, just to see if you can talk and if you're serious. Then you have a bigger interview, maybe in person or a longer video call, with your potential boss or team, where they'll ask about your past and skills. If the job needs special skills, they might give you a test. There's usually a second interview with more senior people, checking how you'd fit in and your long-term plans. They'll also call your references. If everything checks out, they'll offer you the job. You can then negotiate the details or accept it. Finally, they'll get you started with the onboarding.
- Can you describe the management style you've employed in the past?
