Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Occidental Petroleum.
Engineering Technician
It was a panel interview, pretty tech heavy with folks from different disciplines. Overall, it was a good vibe, not too formal, and felt like a place I could see myself working long-term. Made me feel at home.
- What's your experience level with SQL?
- What's your experience level with Excel?
- What's your experience level with Spotfire?
Engineering Technician
Applied online, HR sent an Analytical and Excel assessment after 1 week. Both were pretty easy. For the Excel test, there's a tutorial video on YouTube called ProveIt Excel assessment test. About 1 week later, HR called and asked questions about my current role, reasons for leaving, salary, and benefits. HR then scheduled an interview with the engineering team for another week later. I had 2 interviews on the same day because two engineering teams working on the same project were both looking for 2 Engineering Technician candidates. It was a panel interview with 2 Eng Techs, 3 Engineers, 2 Eng Leads, and 1 IT person. A total of 8 people divided into 2 groups.
- Can you introduce yourself and describe your daily tasks, including the software and programs you use?
- How do you handle database maintenance and management?
- Could you tell me about the projects you're currently working on?
Engineering Technician
I applied online and a recruiter reached out about an online assessment on Access 2003 and Excel 2007. The Excel part required using the program, and the Access part involved coding. I passed that and then had a two-hour in-house assessment on the 2007 versions of both programs, which I also passed. A couple weeks later, I went in for an interview where I met with two reservoir engineers, another engineering tech, and an HR person who discussed benefits. After that, I haven't heard anything back and don't know what the company is doing. I won't consider them again because it seems like a waste of time.
- The questions weren't too hard.
