Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Occidental Petroleum.
Staff Accountant
The interview process ended up being way longer than I thought, especially the online parts. It was way more involved and took up more time than I figured it would, which made it pretty tough overall. The hiring manager is based in Houston.
- Can you tell me about a significant challenge you encountered during your academic studies?
Accountant
I first got an email from a recruiter at OxyChem to set up a phone screening. Then, I had a phone interview with the hiring manager. After that, I flew to Dallas for an onsite interview. The onsite had a panel, which included an accounting manager and the hiring manager. I got the offer in May, having interviewed back in March. They said they'd pay me back for interview expenses, but it's July and I'm still down $50 and haven't heard back from anyone I emailed. So just a heads up, if they ask you to take an uber or taxi, you might not get that money back.
- Can you describe your past experiences using the STAR method?
Accountant
I started out as a contractor, then I applied for a permanent position since I was already working there. They knew my work, so the interview was pretty standard. A lot of people on my team actually started out through staffing agencies like I did, so it seemed pretty normal.
- What makes you want to join this company, and how has your previous experience prepared you for this role?
- Can you explain how your prior jobs have equipped you for this specific work environment?
