First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at O'Charley's.
Assistant Manager
HR called me and I went to the store for an interview that lasted about an hour. They asked typical questions like why I chose O'Charley's, if I'd eaten there before, my experience with cooking, and my preference between FOH or BOH. They also asked about my availability. The HR person mentioned we'd all be like family, with the 5 MITs staying at the GM's house to bond. After reviewing the employee handbook and having me sign some papers, I took a personality test. Then I went for a drug test. Later, the area supervisor called to discuss the personality test, policies, and job description over drinks at a restaurant lounge. During this meeting, I was asked about my preferred work area (FOH or BOH) and stated a preference for BOH, emphasizing the importance of knowing it for store management. We then reviewed my test, and an initial low offer was made. I countered, and my offer was accepted. I started work 10 days later.
- Do you perform better in the Front of House or Back of House?
- What management style do you employ?
Manager
The first step was a phone call with a recruiter. The recruiter didn't seem interested in interviewing me and was brief. They commented on my job history, noting that I've changed jobs twice in the three years since I graduated, and that was it.
- Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult guest.
Service Manager
It was a really friendly and energetic interview. The Operational Director was direct but fair, and the GM was very polite and engaging too. It really felt like a family atmosphere. The interview took about an hour and a half, mainly because the Operational Director enjoys talking. We ended up sharing stories, and it felt like we were just hanging out. I think this was his way of gauging my personality and seeing if I'd be a good fit for the company.
- Can you share an instance where you had to adapt to change?
