Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Northwell Health.
Registered Nurse
Applied to the job and then heard back from a recruiter about two weeks later. The recruiter wanted me to do an online video interview, which I did. Then, about three weeks after that, the recruiter contacted me again to set up an in-person interview. After that, I met with the Nursing Director and Manager.
- Can you describe your background in healthcare?
- In what ways do you think you can enhance the patient's experience?
- Describe a situation where you encountered a challenging or unhappy patient and how you managed it.
Registered Nurse
This interview was for a position at LIJ. The nurse manager seemed hostile and acted as if she had already made a decision about hiring me before the interview even began, not asking me any questions. She even folded my resume as I was leaving. The interview was very brief and impersonal, possibly because they were having a busy shift and rushing through it. It wasn't a great experience, but it seemed like an easy process if this is a role you're really set on.
- Can you share an instance where you exceeded expectations for a patient?
- Describe your response to a patient who becomes unresponsive.
- What steps would you take if a patient's pulse is absent?
Registered Nurse
I applied online and the next day HR called me to schedule an in-person interview for the next few days. The process was fast and efficient, but I had an issue with the interview itself. Three RNs from the unit interviewed me. I was doing fine with the usual questions, but then the nurse manager asked a prioritization question. While I was answering, one of them made faces and reacted with an 'Ugh' in a surprised tone. After that, they seemed to lose interest and their actions showed it. One even tossed my resume aside after the interview, and I was in a Visitor's Lounge. Throughout the interview, I noticed one of them repeatedly checking her watch and making faces based on what she read on my resume. I left feeling inadequate and unqualified. I haven't received an offer yet as it was only a few days ago, but I heard from someone I know who works at the hospital that the unit has high turnover due to burnout and the people working there.
- Can you tell us about yourself?
- What makes you want to work at Northwell?
- What are your career goals for the next 5 years?
