You'll start with a recruiter call where they ask basic questions about your experience. Then, you'll meet the hiring manager for a chat about behavior and service excellence. They want specific examples, but keep it brief. After that, you might have a peer interview, which is common for many roles.

This company wasn't serious about hiring externally for the Program Manager role. I actually interviewed for the same position twice over a 6-month span. Before the first interview, I was informed that the job was already earmarked for an internal candidate, but they had to go through the motions of advertising and interviewing at least one external person to comply with legal and company rules. Even knowing this, I figured it was a chance to expand my network and learn more about the company. In the first interview, I met with two directors who made it very clear they thought the process was a waste of time. One director was constantly on his Blackberry checking emails, and the other was watching the clock and kept announcing how much time was left. The questions they asked were really strange and had nothing to do with the job. I found both of them to be very unprofessional and disrespectful. I get that people can be busy and overworked, but as a manager or leader, you're the face of the company. In my 10 years as a senior manager, if those two had reported to me, I would've let them go immediately. The second interview, six months later, was with a member of the executive team. This person showed up 30 minutes late and cut the scheduled hour-long interview down to just 20 minutes. It was obvious again that I was just taking up someone's time, as they intended to promote from within. I'm fortunate to have opportunities to grow my network and connect with like-minded individuals, but I really dislike wasting my time or the time of the people I meet.

I applied online for a cardiology floor position as a new grad RN. HR contacted me within a week or two to schedule an interview. The first part was with an HR recruiter who asked about 20 questions, which I was prepared for. She said they'd like to hire me and sent me to the hospital for the second interview. Because the floor manager was called in for the overnight shift, I was interviewed by the clinical educator. She gave me a short tour of the busy floor, and everyone seemed nice. After the tour, I was essentially told I had the job. Two days later, HR called with an offer, which I accepted. A post-offer drug screen was required, and results took two days. I started orientation the following Monday, which they did a great job with.

The whole thing took about six weeks. I applied online and the hiring manager called me within a week to set up an interview. The interview was onsite with the manager, lasted about 45 minutes, and included a tour of the department. I got to see some of the work firsthand. They gave me plenty of chances to ask questions about the role. It wasn't a super structured interview. A couple weeks later, HR called with some logistical questions. Then, two weeks after that, they extended an offer.

  • Why should I hire you? Give me three reasons.
