First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Niantic.
Product Manager
The hiring process was transparent, though it moved a bit slowly, but the wait was worthwhile. Niantic is currently in a growth phase, so everyone is very busy with daily tasks. Because people are overbooked, the HR team stayed in close contact and was very communicative throughout the process.
- I participated in a panel interview that included a presentation, and I also completed the standard product manager exercises.
Product Manager
I had an initial chat with a recruiter, then talked to some folks who would be my future teammates. After that, they flew me out to SF for about 3 hours of interviews, and we grabbed lunch at their office there. Then I had a chat with an executive. The office visit itself was really good. The last interview was super tough; I thought it'd be more of a vibes check, but I ended up having to do some major design stuff on the spot.
- Can you outline how you would incorporate accessibility features for a blind user?
- What's your thought process for designing accessible features for blind individuals?
Product Manager
I had several interviews with different team members. It started with the hiring manager, then a Product Sense interview that didn't quite align with the actual job. After that, there was a messy, rushed engineering interview where I had to present my product design ideas. Later rounds involved people from Trust and Safety, Project Management, and Data Science, which were pretty good and gave me insights into the team. They then asked for another interview with a Data Science person, which felt like too much after all the previous interviews. The questions were mostly the same, but the interviewer was nice and it was an enjoyable chat. They said the team would meet to decide if I'd move to the final interviews with a VP and HRBP. After a long wait, the recruiter let me know that the role was on hold because of the holiday shutdown and budget issues. I get that things change, but being left hanging for over a month was tough. It would have been better to just get a clear no than be in limbo for so long. The whole thing felt like a waste of time, especially after so many interview rounds. I know the job market is tough, but the company really needs to rethink their interview process. It's unclear why so many steps were needed, especially since their reputation doesn't match up to their Google connections. Given the recent data privacy issues, the company seems to be struggling. More transparency and care would be appreciated. It's disappointing to invest over two months into this process only to find out the role won't be filled.
