Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
Security Officer
The interview process was alright. The hiring manager (security supervisor) seemed really interested in my skills and past experience. He asked about my experience with incident reports and patrolling, and stuff like that. Everything was fine except the pay offered, which was $18/hour for the overnight shift and wasn't negotiable. He asked me what I currently make, which is a lot more. He made it clear he wanted me to leave my current job but wouldn't budge on the rate. When I said it would be unreasonable to ask that without negotiation, he lost interest and was kind of rude after that. I think NYP is a great place to work, but HR really needs to train their staff on how to interview candidates properly. Even if there's no fit, interviewing is a form of networking and respect should be mutual. Plus, asking about salary history is illegal in NYS, so staff needs to be aware of that too. Overall, the interview was okay, but the salary offered seems more suited for an entry-level person.
- Why are you interested in working for NYP?
- Can you describe the steps you take when creating an incident report?
- What are your career aspirations for the next 5 years?
Security Officer
I applied for security at Cornell and was scheduled for a big security interview day. Before that, I got an email asking for 5 references with active emails and phone numbers, and each reference had to fill out a survey about my job skills. After my references completed the survey, I received another email with options to choose my interview time. I had a 1-on-1 interview with a Sergeant. It was a calm and easy question. Other interviews were happening in the same room, but it was still 1-on-1. After the interview, I was called back a week later and will now be going in for my orientation.
- What can you contribute to Presbyterian Hospital to help us remain the top-ranked institution?
- Can you provide references?
Security Officer
I submitted my application online at the beginning of the month. About two weeks later, the Talent Acquisition team reached out and invited me to an Interview Day event. The atmosphere was really friendly and relaxed. It was a one-on-one interview, but there were two other interviews happening in the same room at the same time. I was asked standard behavioral and experience questions, and the interview took about 30-45 minutes. It took about a month after the interview before I got the offer, so don't stress if you don't hear back right away.
- Can you describe a challenging situation or coworker you encountered, detailing what happened and how you managed it?
- What is your approach to handling an angry individual?
