Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Newsweek.
Editor
It was a long process from submitting my application to getting the initial call and then the actual interviews. It took over three months from when I submitted my application until I finally received an offer. The HR department wasn't very communicative between when I sent my application and when I received an interview request. It took so long I had forgotten I had even applied and interviewed for the role.
- What are your thoughts on general interview questions?
Editor
I applied for an editor position and had an initial chat with a US-based recruiter, which went well. They then suggested I was a better fit for a more senior, albeit vaguely defined, editor role. I then spoke with two more people, one based in London and the editor-in-chief, and also completed a test. I was consistently told my feedback was positive and that they wanted to move forward. During my final interview with the editor-in-chief, I asked some pointed questions about the company's finances and employee reviews. A few days later, I was rejected, despite being told I was a strong candidate. I suspect it was due to my questions. My request for specific feedback went unanswered, which seemed like a bad sign.
- Could you share your experience that is pertinent to this position?
- What experience do you have that relates to this job?
Editor
The interview process was very straightforward and friendly. It consisted of two stages, and the first one was a great experience. Both interviews felt informal and they advanced me through the process very quickly.
- Can you share your experience with managing a team?
