First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at New York State Technology Enterprise Corporation.
Consultant
I had three interviews. First, a recruiter phone chat, then a panel interview with future bosses. Lastly, another panel where we reviewed a work sample I did. They were clear about what they expected. It was a good chat and I really liked it. It felt like an interview for someone with experience, expecting you to know a lot already and have skills you can show would work for the company. They told me my interview was part of a new, updated process, and you could tell. It was super positive, and NYSTEC became my top choice for jobs at that time.
- How would your skills fit into the company culture as you understand it?
Operations Analyst
So, I was offered a job at NYSTEC, but they rescinded it after I asked for onboarding stuff to be in writing. I'd already signed the offer, and then heard nothing until 4 days later. The start date passed, and I missed some calls because they'd try to talk about onboarding without setting a time. I finally asked for email communication, and then they sent me an email saying they weren't moving forward, like 3 days after I was supposed to start. The actual interviews were pretty standard and not hard, with normal questions and a simple assignment that you had to present to the hiring manager. The only tricky part was getting HR to actually put things in writing.
- What motivates your interest in joining NYSTEC?
- How do your qualifications align with the requirements of this role?
- Can you share some details about yourself?
IT Security Consultant
You'll first be contacted by the hiring manager and then invited to interview by HR. The company will invite you to their local headquarters, like Albany, Rome, or NYC. There, you'll meet the hiring manager and some senior team members for a friendly chat. Expect a lot of questions about your experience with State government. It would be super helpful if you knew about NY State government from public announcements. DOH is a big customer, and NYSTEC is really proud of its history and partnership with the State, so definitely research NYSTEC beforehand – it's a great way to impress them. Make sure you have specific examples of how you've used your skills to help clients. If you've done any community work, be ready to talk about it briefly. NYSTEC likes hiring former State employees and experienced pros, and they hire at all levels. Don't seem arrogant, but be confident. The hiring managers are experts, and everyone there actually does real work. It's crucial for their business to find and keep talented people who make their reputation great, while also keeping team spirit. They say it's a fantastic place to work, and they really think hard about each hire. After the interview, HR or the hiring manager will let you know if you got the job. Sometimes, they might ask for another interview. Try to get a business card from everyone you meet and send a personal thank-you note afterward. Be personal, friendly, professional, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. There are no tricks or tests. They're assessing your ability to do the job, but more importantly, your ability to make clients happy and fit into the organization. If you get an interview, the hiring manager already respects you. Interviews aren't given without merit. Ask about their clients and projects with NYS. Listen carefully. You might even interview with a NYSTEC client, so knowing about the State and your field is key. Don't pretend, just relax. Oh, and double-check your references; they interview at least three professional ones and use a third party for a thorough check. A drug test is also required. Good luck! I loved my time there. Turnover is really low, and they genuinely want to keep their employees.
- Given that this is a small company focused on State business, expect the most challenging questions to be about your understanding of State business and your knowledge of NYSTEC, which is all available publicly. If you come from the private sector, be prepared to dedicate extra time to researching the public sector online.
Systems Administrator
After applying online, I had a phone screen, then an in-person interview, followed by a senior-level in-person interview. It was pretty standard and straightforward, mostly focusing on whether my values and culture fit with theirs.
- Can you share an example of how you've upheld our company values?
- How do your personal values align with the values of our company?
- Describe a past experience where you successfully integrated into a company's culture.
