Interviewing with New America was a nightmare. After being referred to a position, I went through a phone interview and in-person interview. This process took 2 - 3 weeks; a little dragged out but interviewers seemed respectful and easy to talk to. The final round was a phone interview with the department's director. After the interview, I was offered the job, and worked out compensation and a start date with the hiring manager. (The hiring manager wanted me to leave my current job and start right away, after a 4 -5 week interview process; that was the first big red flag). I called back the next day and verbally accepted the offer... ...I never heard back from anyone at New America. Phone calls went unanswered. Voicemails weren't returned. Emails were never replied to. I've been ghosted by companies before, but this one took the cake. If you apply to work at New America, don't let up on the job search until you sign the offer letter. That said, I wouldn't work for a company that treats candidates so disrespectfully.

I had a Skype call with the operations director. The lead person in charge of the fellowship position skipped the interview and we only spoke briefly at the end. I wish there was more time in the interview, and I thought it didn't speak well of the organization that not all of the interviewers who were scheduled to be in the meeting were actually able to attend.

The phone interview for this role was quite straightforward, focusing on basic questions. They did ask me to submit a writing sample during the interview, which might have been influenced by my highlighting previous writing experience. The interviewers were very friendly. An in-person interview wasn't part of the process, but this could be due to me being located out-of-state.
