So I applied online for the Software Engineer role at Bright Health and heard back about a week later for a phone call with a technical recruiter. They laid out the interview steps: first, that recruiter call, then a timed HackerRank assessment, followed by a Zoom call with a hiring manager, and finally a panel interview with the engineering team. After the recruiter call, I did the HackerRank test, which had LeetCode easy/medium questions. My tip: show your work in the editor if you get stuck. The hiring manager call was about 30 minutes and focused on my technical and professional background, which was in a different area than Bright Health needed. I basically had to explain how my skills could still be useful. I thought it went alright. I got rejected a few hours after that via email, saying my background wasn't a good enough fit. The whole process was pretty fast, like 3 weeks from application to rejection, and everyone was really nice. My only issue was doing the tech assessment before they decided my background wasn't the right fit.

Coding Technical

I had a quick chat with the recruiter, then completed a Hired coding assessment. I was a bit hesitant because these online assessments can be so arbitrary. They emailed back saying it wasn't a pass/fail and they just wanted to see my problem-solving and coding approach, not copy-pasted solutions. They even mentioned they've moved forward with candidates who scored low if they liked their problem-solving process, even if they ran out of time, because they watch playback. They stressed this assessment was just one small part of the decision and it's a two-way street. I thought it was all BS, but I did it anyway. It turned out to be some 'fix this code' tasks with little context and a Dynamic programming problem. DP is super hard and takes ages to figure out, but they expect you to solve it in under an hour. It's the same old story, another company thinking they're Google or Facebook. Then I got a generic rejection email saying my technical skills didn't match the role.
