The interview process involved a recruiter call for Oracle Netsuit, followed by a technical interview with two tech managers. During the tech manager interview, I learned about their monolithic system, which is so large it requires remote VMs and likely has very slow CI/CD pipelines and infrequent production releases, suggesting a lack of Agile practices. They also mentioned a 20% frontend requirement and the expectation for engineers to handle QA tasks, essentially looking for 'custom engineers'. The interview was conducted in English, though some Spanish was used. The technical interview, also in English, involved coding exercises on a problematic HackerRank platform that had an unreliable IDE. This setup felt like programming in a static, procedural style, neglecting object-oriented principles, code readability, maintainability, class design, scalability, architecture, and testing, which I emphasized as crucial engineering aspects. The focus seemed to be on rapid algorithm development, potentially at the expense of code quality. I was not offered a chance to ask questions or given any feedback at the end, which felt very outdated.

After applying and going to a meetup, I had my first call with HR, which was mostly behavioral questions and a few technical ones. The next day, I spoke with a manager who asked more about my background and the job. Following that, I had a 2-hour take-home coding challenge. A week later, they asked about my availability for a team interview the following week. But then, a few days after that, I got scheduled for a phone interview with a manager from a different team. Didn't get an offer in the end.

I sent in my application online and then heard back from a recruiter about 50 days after that. The whole thing had a few parts. First, a 30-minute call with a recruiter. Then, another 30-minute call with the hiring manager where they talked about the company/team and asked about me. After that, I got an assignment with SQL queries and a Java coding task to do at home, which took about 2 hours. Then came two hours of onsite interviews with two people, where they asked theory questions, SQL questions, and gave me one coding problem. Next, another two hours of onsite interviews, this time with three people, focusing on a design problem and two coding questions about algorithms. The final step was a 1.5-hour interview with the hiring manager. The whole process felt really organized and smooth. Everyone I met, from the recruiter to the team members and the manager, was super nice. Everything they advertised on their "netsuitwaterloo" site was spot on. I really wanted to join them, but sadly, they didn't feel the same way about me and I got rejected after the last interview.
