First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division.
Branch Head
I was told about the interview process ahead of time. The hiring manager was quick to answer my questions. There were 4 interviewers, and an EEO and HR rep were present. I was allowed to ask for questions to be repeated since they were often two or three parts.
- Can you introduce yourself and explain why you are the best candidate for this position?
Engineer/Scientist
Applied through uni and had an interview in Nov 2015. Got a business card and was told they'd schedule a site interview for end of Nov. Emailed over Thanksgiving break, no response. Emailed again over Christmas break and early Jan, still no response. End of Jan, an HR rep scheduled me for an interview in Bethesda, MD in mid-Feb 2016. Interviewed with two people there. They said decisions in two weeks. Heard NOTHING from anyone after trying to contact them multiple times over those two weeks. Then, when I thought I was rejected, I got another interview invite, this time in Philly. Spoke with one interviewer, told hiring decisions in a week or two. Three weeks later, still no response, so I emailed the HR rep asking what's up. She replied, 'I don't see any indication that we will make you an offer at this time.' About an hour later, got an 'official' rejection from a general recruiting email. Easily one of the most frustrating, unprofessional experiences EVER. The interviews themselves were easy, lots of questions about personal goals and career aspirations, plus standard situational questions (how to handle a bad teammate, managing multiple projects, etc).
- Tell me about a challenging situation and how you handled it.
- What are your personal career aspirations?
- Where do you see your career progressing within the company?
Mechanical Engineer
I had a pretty easy interview on campus through career services back in October 2015. They asked some easy questions about my personal goals and where I saw myself in 5-10 years. They said I'd hear back in 4-6 weeks about an onsite interview. It took them four months to email me from HR inviting me to an onsite in Bethesda, MD. That long delay was a bit of a red flag, but the rest went okay. I ended up having three onsite interviews for four different positions. The interviews were generally easy but got a bit more detailed and technical. I got an offer the following week.
- In material testing, what properties do you look for?
- What are your personal goals?
- In your career, where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years?
Software Engineer
They found my resume in their talent bank and reached out via email to set up a phone chat. It was a pretty standard review of my resume, my past experiences, and what I'm interested in. They mainly wanted to see if I'd be a good fit for a specific type of code.
- Tell me about your favorite work experience to date.
- Why did you enjoy that experience the most?
- Can you provide more details about your contributions to that project or job?
