First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Naughty Dog.
Programmer
First, I spoke with HR, and then we went straight into the technical interview. I passed one round. It heavily focused on C++, data structure, hardware speed, CPU cache, and areas specified for the position. The people were all nice and chill, and the questions weren't super hard, but they still covered a wide range of topics and focused on fundamental understanding of C++, Memory, Hardware, and Game Engine architecture.
- Tell me about C++.
- What do you know about Memory?
- What about Hardware?
Programmer
I got a call from HR to set up a first technical phone interview, they said I'd just need paper and pen. The interviewer was clearly in a rush during the call, jumping straight into questions without intro. HR said it'd be 30-60 mins, but it only lasted 15 mins because there were no breaks and he was rushing for answers. This left me with a bad feeling about the company, like they just wanted to get interviews done fast. HR called again to say I passed the first round, but she sounded unhappy and didn't want to bother scheduling another interview. She repeated the same thing: 'The interview will be 45min-1hr. Have paper and pen'. For the second call, the interviewer again went straight into questions. This was probably the worst interview ever. After a few questions, I got stuck on a 3D math question. The interviewer was clearly frustrated I didn't know, and he tried to guide me. I could tell he was getting impatient, and I tried to guess. After about a minute, he cut me off and said 'All right, that's all the questions I have for you'. This was only 8 minutes in because he was apparently so annoyed I couldn't answer one question that he didn't want to waste time asking others. He hung up without saying bye, leaving me shocked he only gave 8 unfriendly minutes. Overall, worst phone interviews ever. I wouldn't recommend this company, the employees seem to have attitude problems and are impatient. Good luck if you still want to work here, I definitely won't apply again. I highly suggest reading other reviews, they seem unprofessional.
- Can you calculate 2 to the power of 8 and explain why that number is significant?
- What is the hexadecimal representation of -2?
- Can you define the dot product and explain its relationship to angles?
Software Engineer
This interview involved more math than I expected for a game dev role, focusing on linear algebra like vectors and matrices. Some hardware architecture and general software development questions were also asked, but they weren't too tough. I went through a few rounds, but unfortunately, I didn't get the offer due to US visa issues.
- How would you optimize data layout for better memory cache performance?
