Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at National University of Singapore.
Research Assistant
I interviewed for a Student Research Assistant position and the process was pretty standard and organized. They mostly asked about my background, skills, and interest in the research. The interviewer was nice and professional, and I got to ask them questions too about the job and what they expected. It was a good intro to the team’s research.
- Could you tell me about a research project you were involved in and what your contribution was?
Research Assistant
So, the whole process had three parts. First, I had to do an online application and a quick test for problem-solving and judging situations. Then, I had a virtual chat with HR about why I wanted the job, my future plans, and my schooling. Lastly, I was in a panel interview with the R&D folks where I had to present one of my past projects and then answer some technical and behavioral questions. It was all pretty clear and gave me a good sense of what the company is about and what they're looking for.
- Can you tell us about a project where you used scientific or analytical skills to tackle a real-world issue, and what metrics you used to assess its success?
Research Assistant
This was the worst interview experience. There were 2 interviewers on the panel. From the very beginning, even before the session started, they both sounded uninterested. Throughout the session, they had a monotonous tone and were extremely rude and unpleasant. While I was answering questions, they would find any way to rebut my responses and even doubt my abilities by responding sarcastically. It honestly made me wonder if this was an interview or an interrogation. I thought an institution like this would have decent interviewers, but I guess I was wrong. Maybe the institution should consider assessing staff before they qualify to be interviewers because not everyone is cut out to be one. I even had the basic courtesy to email them after the interview to thank them for the opportunity, but I received no response. Overall, it was VERY unprofessional.
- In what ways do you believe you are a good fit for this role?
- Can you describe your research experiences and the procedures you followed?
