I applied for the GATE 2019 exam in instrumentation engineering and also applied to NTPC. I was shortlisted based on my GATE score and rank, then called for a group discussion followed by a personal interview.

First, applicants were shortlisted based on marks with different cutoffs from different departments. After resume screening, there was a panel interview with a 5:1 ratio, including 1 HR person and the rest were technical experts who asked questions. The interview began with a discussion on my favorite topic, digital, with simple, basic questions. Then, they moved to their domain, transducers, asking questions about every kind of transducer like pressure, temperature, and level, covering all areas. They also asked about NTPC work, suggesting some research on the role. Finally, there were some HR questions about the place of posting, etc. After the interview, results were declared around 10 pm.

NTPC conducts a yearly written exam. They select about 500-600 candidates from lakhs of applicants, roughly a 1:5 ratio. Shortlisted candidates then face interviews covering technical and HR aspects.
