Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Nanyang Technological University.
Research Associate
The interview was with a Professor and salary was negotiated right away. Generally, candidates with good work experience and high academics are invited for interviews. If you are a recent graduate, your marks are sufficient for an interview. If salary is negotiated during the interview, it's a good sign you're selected. For experienced candidates, the reputation of your previous company and your academics are important. Experienced candidates will also have a skills review. You'll find out if you succeeded a few days later.
- What motivated your move to Singapore?
Research Associate
Before my interview, the professor asked me to create a table listing my skills, both lab and computational, and my proficiency levels for each. On the interview day, the professor asked me several questions based on my CV, focusing on experiences she thought aligned with the job requirements.
- Are you able to perform cell culture?
- If you needed to set up a lab experiment analogous to one you've done previously, could you manage it?
- Do you intend to pursue a PhD?
Research Associate
The hiring process took about two months to complete. It involved two interview rounds. The first was with my direct manager to discuss the project. The second involved the center's director and my direct manager. Both conversations were quite informal and didn't dive into many technical details or specific questions. However, the overall recruitment timeline was quite lengthy. Following the interviews, there were some HR procedures that moved very slowly.
- Can you discuss your previous work experience?
- What subjects and skills did you acquire during your college studies?
