We were taken to a room with about 15 other people who were also applying, and there was a presentation. They had each of us read a slide, and then they asked us some questions about our work experience and why we wanted to work there. They also asked what Christmas means to us. After that, they had us do a roleplay where we pretended to sell an item with each other, like we were actually working there.

First, I had a chat with the manager. Then, they wanted me to do a sales demo, which I felt awkward about. I don't think anyone performs well in that kind of high-pressure situation.

  • Can you demonstrate how you would sell this product to me?

It was super chill and informal, a group interview with about 6 people. They started by introducing themselves and chatting about the company and the job. They asked if I knew anything about the company, or they'd tell me. After chatting about the company and role, we turned to our group members and introduced ourselves, shared why we love retail, and our thoughts on the meaning of Christmas. Then, we got a scenario: what would you do if a customer needed help finding a gift for their teenaged niece? Someone in my group actually acted it out, which the interviewers really liked! Next, we had a role-play where we were given a product and had to try and sell it to the interviewer, with bonus points for upselling. That was the last activity before they wrapped up. Asking a lot of questions at the end is a good idea, it shows you're eager to learn the job.

Confirmed questions3 questions
  • How would you handle a situation where a customer needs assistance selecting a present for their teenaged niece?
  • Could you please share your name, what drives your passion for retail, and your personal interpretation of the meaning of Christmas?
  • For the selling scenario, you'll be given a product. Your task is to sell this product to the interviewer and attempt to upsell an additional item.
