First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at My Gym Enterprises.
Gymnastics Coach
We were asked to work for free for the entire duration of the interview, which was the main part of the process. While that's usually okay, the expectations were really high. I was put on the spot to do a puppet show for a song they only played once, all by myself. It felt like a lot to ask from people who hadn't even trained with or learned their curriculum. After waiting past the expected response time to find out I didn't get the job, I received a subpar email. I've encountered better application processes.
- What are your long-term career aspirations?
Gym Teacher
I applied and after a few days got a link for a personality test. Following that, I was invited for what I thought would be a one-on-one interview, but it ended up being a group interview. I had to push my lunch back an hour for it, and it took the entire hour. They didn't really focus on any one person, and they'd already started when I arrived, even though I was early. What they described seemed like a daycare, which I have experience with, but they were really dismissive. I honestly felt like I wasn't even interviewed; it felt like a waste of time.
- Could you start by telling us about yourself?
Teacher
I found the job posting on craigslist and applied through the My Gym website. The owner contacted me the very next day to schedule an interview for later that week. I went to the gym for an in-person interview and was told to wear comfortable clothes and socks. I only spoke with the owner, but it's pretty common to also talk to the director since that's who you'll be working with most of the time. Having been there for three years, I've noticed a pattern in who gets hired and who doesn't. You won't get hired if you're not super outgoing and loud. If you're timid, this job probably isn't for you. It was also clear that if you weren't in pretty good shape, you wouldn't last long. Like I said, it's a really energetic job and I'd often be sweating the whole shift.
- Can you tell me about your experience working with children?
- How would you handle a situation with a challenging parent?
- Could you memorize a puppet show and perform it for us now, with parents and children present?
Fitness Instructor
The managers asked me about my work history, my schooling, and skills relevant to the job. Then, I put on a My Gym shirt and helped out with a 'terrific tots' class. I think I got the job because I sang along with the puppet show the manager did at the end of class, which the other assistant instructors didn't do.
- Can you tell me about your experience working with young children?
