The first four rounds of my interviews were great and moved really fast. I'm giving it a thumbs down because of how my last interview went. The interviewer seemed to have no interest in talking to me, his connection was terrible, and he was in a room with a lot of echo. It was really hard to understand him, and he got annoyed when I told him the connection and echo made it difficult to hear him. He mentioned we worked at the same bank about 10 years ago and asked for my manager's name. He got even more annoyed when I couldn't recall it.

So, a recruiter hit me up on LinkedIn and we set up a call. It was like a 30-minute chat where they went over the company's mission and goals and what this role is all about. I thought it went pretty well, and they said they'd email with next steps. But then, like a day later, they emailed back saying they weren't moving forward with me. Apparently, they already had two other developers in round 3 of their interviews and didn't need anyone else.

It started off fine with a recruiter screen then a scheduled interview with the hiring manager. Honestly, it felt like one of the most disengaged interviews I've ever had. The interviewer seemed indifferent, perhaps they had already decided or were just eager to finish. I followed up three days later as the hiring manager indicated a 2-3 day response time for the next stage. I received a generic response on the weekend, about 5 days later. While it seemed like a good company, I'm actually relieved not to proceed if that's their approach. They also mentioned significant structural and personnel changes, which felt like a red flag.

The overall experience was great, very professional and all the people I talked to were nice and engaged. The first round was behavioral, to check for mutual fit. After that, I had a virtual onsite with 3 separate 1-hour interviews. These included a system design question about building a scalable URL shortener, a deep dive into my past work experience from my resume, and a coding challenge. The coding part involved discussing Rails and MVC, followed by a straightforward coding task to pass existing test cases. Even though I didn't get an offer, they gave me quick and helpful feedback, which was appreciated.
