Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at MSC Industrial Direct.
Account Executive
They had 3 interviews before I was hired. They're looking for people who are motivated and have problem-solving skills. People who can work alone but also communicate well. Someone who can be a one-stop shop for the customer and use the tools MSC has developed.
- How do you envision your success in this position?
Account Executive
HR called me for an initial phone screen. They seemed impressed by my sales experience in the same industry and with a competitor. After the call, I received an assessment test, which I think I did well on. I followed up to confirm they received my results, and they said they'd pass my info to the hiring manager. A few days later, I got a rejection email. I'm confused because I have direct experience with a competitor in the same role, yet I didn't even get a face-to-face interview.
- Can you introduce yourself and discuss your previous experience?
Account Executive
The interview process included a recruiter call, a phone interview, a face to face interview with the Branch Manager, and a phone interview with the Market Manager. There was a background and credit rating check, but no drug test. They really want metal working experience when they can get it - those with it will be ranked as more valuable. A new trend is to hire younger people with less experience and low ball on salary with a Ford Focus. Experience is not valued. They are now trying to be like Fastenal, not MSC.
