Consultant
There was a phone screening where we went over my resume and some typical consulting questions. Then, a behavioral interview with a leader, which felt more professional than the screening. Finally, an office visit for the final round, which included a group case study and a presentation.
- What makes you want to get into consulting?
- Could you walk me through your resume?
- Tell me about yourself.
IT Systems Administrator
I applied online and a recruiter reached out. We had a long call where they asked about my experience with the job's skills and my past roles. The next day, the Operations Manager called me for an hour-long phone chat about my skills and resume. Three days later, I went in for a scheduled one-hour in-person meeting with the Operations Manager. It turns out this meeting was in a conference room, and we mostly just went over the same things again. He told me about himself and the company. Then, someone else came in for a 'Technical Interview' that wasn't on my calendar. This guy was a Systems Engineer and seemed unprepared and maybe like he was filling in for someone. The interview wasn't technical at all based on my background or the job's requirements. Instead, I was asked for ideas on planning new client server systems. It felt like they might not know what they're really looking for, as it didn't match my decade of Systems Admin experience. I suspect they might be after someone with a PME cert, a Project Manager, or IT consulting sales experience, not a Sys Admin. While I can build servers, I'm not a PM or sales consultant and don't recommend server systems for purchase. The role was described as an IT Sys Admin for MRE Consulting, supporting internal and external clients, but the interviews didn't show that. The Systems Engineer who did the technical interview actually said some negative things about the company and seemed annoyed they were hiring, almost trying to dissuade me. He explained the role in detail and it sounds like they want someone from an MSP who can sell servers or cloud solutions, not a Sys Admin. After the interview, I got a parking validation, but it only covered part of the time I was there because the receptionist didn't account for the extra time. So, I had to pay to leave. Bring cash.
- Given a failing server with multiple critical roles (AD, DHCP, DNS, File, Print, SQL, etc.) and a tight budget, how would you approach fixing it?
- If a customer's single server running multiple roles (AD, DHCP, DNS, File, Print, SQL, etc.) is constantly failing, but budget is not an issue, what solutions would you propose?
- Tell me about your experience with the skills required for this position.
IT Specialist
I was first contacted in March, but didn't hear back until October since I wasn't available to start until December. The whole process was pretty good, with about 3 phone interviews and 1 in-person interview. Everyone I spoke with, both on the phone and in person, was really easy to talk to and made things comfortable and straightforward. The final interview was with the manager I'd be working under, and it was just as relaxed as the phone calls.
- Can you identify the meaning behind common acronyms, such as DHCP?
Technical Support Analyst
Started with a quick call from HR, then had a phone interview and later an in-person with the manager and an engineer. Finished with an executive interview and another sit-down with HR. After each interview stage, there was a follow-up call to discuss the meeting or call.
- Can you tell me about an accomplishment you're particularly proud of and explain why?
