Mr. Cooper Software Engineer Interview Questions
& Process

In March 2026, I had my placement drive through campus for the Software Engineer Trainee role at Mr.Cooper (acquired by Rocket Mortgage). It started with an online test on Hacker-earth, which was MCQ and coding, proctored via video and lasted for 3 hours. You could answer questions in any order. The test had 29 questions in total, split into three parts: 1. Aptitude & Logical Reasoning (questions 1-10/12): Focused on topics like simple interest, compound interest, boat problems, train problems, profit and loss, and time and work. It was important to know about US currency concepts (pennies, cents, nickles) and also about true discount, banker discount, relative total profit percentage, and assertion/reason. 2. Technical MCQ (questions 13-25): Covered DBMS (Normalization, SQL queries, Keys, Joins were very important), C/Java memory concepts (stack, heap, free(), Garbage Collection), Java File Handling (Reader, writer), code snippet outputs, Constructors, sorting/linkedlist time complexities, and OOPS. 3. DSA & SQL: Had 4 questions - 3 DSA problems (2 medium: Recursion, Regex/String; 1 hard: Binary Search) and 1 SQL problem (subqueries and Joins). You need decent coding knowledge for this part.

First, there's an online assessment, which is basically a screening to see if you can code and solve problems. It usually involves 1 or 2 DSA questions, kind of like on LeetCode, covering stuff like arrays and strings. Sometimes there's also an aptitude or logic part, and maybe even a debugging or output prediction task. This whole thing takes about 60-90 minutes and is generally easy to medium difficulty. Then, you'll have Technical Interview Round 1. The goal here is to check your core programming skills and how deep you can go with problem-solving. Expect 1-2 coding problems, similar to medium LeetCode. They'll also ask conceptual questions about OOPs, OS, DBMS, and networking basics. This round is about 45-60 minutes. After that, it's Technical Interview Round 2, which is more of a System/Project Round. They want to see your design thinking, how well you know your projects, and your real-world coding. So, be ready to talk about your project's architecture, database, APIs, and why you picked certain technologies. If it's for SDE-1 or higher, you might get a system design question, like designing a URL shortener or a chat app. Communication is key here – explain your choices, scalability, and data flow. This also lasts 45-60 minutes. Finally, there's the HR / Behavioral Round. This is all about checking your communication, how you work in a team, and if you're a good fit for the company. Expect questions like 'Tell me about yourself,' 'Why this company,' and behavioral ones where you should use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to talk about challenges or how you handle pressure. This is the shortest round, around 20-30 minutes.

So I had this really bad interview. First, there was this round with mcqs and 3 coding questions. Then, a system design round. Both were pretty tough. The third round was a tech interview with 3 interviewers who were super rude and unprofessional. They barely asked anything from my resume. One asked about oops, another about dsa, and the last about sql. This sql guy was really slow with his english, making it hard to understand him. When we asked him to repeat, he’d just move on, saying we didn’t know anything. Everyone else felt the same way. The interviewers were just chatting and making fun of us, which was really unprofessional and discouraging.
