I did a bunch of research on the company and the specific store, but it ended up not mattering at all. The interviewer didn't even introduce herself or use my name. She asked me to talk a bit about myself, then immediately asked if I knew it was a night job, saying 'usually ladies prefer to work during the daytime'. The questions were pretty standard, but all focused on situations and examples. She was really unresponsive the whole time. She said she was happy with my answers, but I got the feeling she'd already decided before I even started talking. It seemed like she was set on hiring a man for the job.

I was called in for an interview at the store I applied to, but I had to wait for almost half an hour on the shop floor near customer service. Then, I met a 'manager' who said it was an informal chat to explain the job role since many applicants don't get what it entails. We talked in the store's public cafe, not an office. Basically, they didn't provide a detailed job description online, just listed corporate values, didn't specify hours, and offered a 'competitive' salary. What they're really looking for is a 'duty manager on overnights' who can inspire and motivate, manage a team, and own and deliver replenishment. You'll also have a 'substantial shop floor walk' in the morning where they'll critique your work. It's 5 nights a week, at least 43 hours, with a flexible schedule based on business needs (meaning weekends). They also want someone with specific retail shift replenishment experience. For all this, they offer £26k per year, total. If you round up to 50 hours a week, including getting ahead starts and travel to and from work (but not staying late for their shop floor walk), it works out to about £9 an hour. This is similar to what day colleagues at Sainsbury's earn... for a 'senior manager'. Unbelievable/pathetic!

The interview process was very straightforward. It started with a recruiter call, then I met the hiring manager on Zoom. After that, there was an in-person presentation. The final step was a 10-minute interview on Zoom. They kept me informed about the process from the beginning. The people were very nice. They asked good questions and gave a good amount of information.
