Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Morningstar.
Research Associate
I applied on their website and got an aptitude test email with 3 sections, 30 minutes long. After passing, I received an email for a candidate information session where they talked about the ESG research associate role. Then, we had to fill out a survey to be shortlisted for interviews. The interviews were 2 back-to-back rounds on the same day with the Team lead and then the Manager. I felt I did well in both rounds, answering all questions correctly, especially the technical ones. But, the interviewer seemed unhappy because I was a fresher, which is frustrating because the job ad clearly stated freshers could apply and they review resumes before shortlisting. It's unprofessional to invite freshers if they aren't considered. They are wasting our time and effort. I don't understand their selection criteria if it's not based on knowledge or qualifications.

Research Associate
Applied online through their website on Day 1. Got selected for an aptitude test on Day 1, which included English, quant, and logical reasoning. Cleared the test on Day 4 and attended their candidate information session. Interview day was Day 5. Cleared the first round and then the second round. Received an email on Day 9 stating I was selected. Received the offer letter on Day 12. Joining date is Day 25. The process is slow, and they don't provide feedback to unsuccessful candidates. For freshers, their pay is fixed. Everything is very structured, and they are very professional. The timeline might differ for others depending on the batch.
- Can you tell me what ESG is?
- What is your motivation for working in ESG?
- Why do you want to work at Morningstar, and what are your future aspirations?
Research Associate
Applied for Research Associate at Pitchbook (a Morningstar company). The interview process was long, about 3-4 weeks from screening to offer. It started with an assessment (domain questions, verbal, reasoning, typing test). The assessment was easy to moderate. After that, candidates were briefed about the role, followed by three interviews (team leader, supervisor, manager) all on the same day. An HR round was expected 1-2 weeks later, but in my case, I got the offer directly after 2 weeks without the HR round.
- Can you tell me about PE, VC, and M&A?
- What do you know about general partners and limited partners in PE?
- Could you define what an operating subsidiary is?
