Got an email a month ago for a phone interview. Set it up. On interview day, recruiter never called, so I emailed HR. Few days later, got an apology email saying the recruiter left and a new one would reach out. A week passed, got an email with the new recruiter's name and to expect an email to schedule a phone interview. Another week went by, and I got the email to schedule the interview. On the day of the new phone interview, I spoke with the recruiter. After the interview, she said the hiring manager wanted a virtual face-to-face interview. I did that interview, and it went well. She liked my background and skills, mentioning they're hiring 10+ people. Days later, I got an email saying they chose another candidate. It was confusing and poor communication on their end, making me wait over a month. Very disrespectful of my time.

So, the interview process was pretty standard, but the interviewer seemed really impressed with my skills. She mentioned that if they had enough spots in the training classes, they'd hire me right away. I was told I'd hear back by Monday at 2:00 PM, but I didn't get any news. I waited until after 4:30 and then sent an email. The reply I got was that they had reduced the number of available positions in training. I'm pretty bummed about not getting the job, but I don't think that's the whole story.

The interview process was quite disorganized. The first round was rushed with a senior QA Engineer. Then, unexpectedly, the second round involved three other QAs. Normally, you'd expect to progress to more senior individuals, not back to a team. If they knew how to conduct interviews, they'd have swapped those rounds and failed me in the first, saving my time, as they seem to have plenty to spare. The lead interviewer in the second round presented a coding task that was too time-consuming for an interview setting (around 20 minutes), and under pressure with three people watching, I couldn't complete it perfectly. He ended the interview abruptly after hearing my partial solution, which felt rude. The other two interviewers were fine, but the first one seemed to be the main decision-maker. The overall impression was that the QA department was set on hiring a very specific demographic.

I had a good initial chat with the recruiter, who seemed like a good hire for the company. But the rest of the interview process felt fake. They accidentally sent me an internal document before the interview, which mentioned a specific person the hiring manager was personally referred and was the 'strong frontrunner,' with their name listed under 'ideal candidate.' I looked this person up, and they don't have nearly the experience I do, especially since I've actually built a program in this very niche industry. I even joked to my partner that it was probably just for show. I did the interview anyway. We had a nice conversation, and the recruiter said he'd recommend me to the hiring manager. Unsurprisingly, I got a rejection email the next morning. While I understand hiring managers have referrals, I'm frustrated they wasted 45 minutes of my time on what felt like a sham interview, especially for a leadership role, when they clearly wouldn't consider a better candidate. They should have paid consultants to conduct a fake interview rather than tricking an external candidate. At least I only lost 45 minutes instead of several hours like some other candidates likely did.
