Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Modern Luxury.
Journalist
It was a simple phone interview. The person I spoke with was really nice and the questions were easy and direct. They mostly wanted to hear about my past writing work and what kind of things I'd be interested in covering for their publication.
- Can you share an instance where you encountered a work challenge?
Editor
I had a phone interview, then was asked to complete a very long editorial proposal. It felt like they were using me and the other candidates to get editorial ideas for the future. I had what seemed like a great interview with the head editor in Los Angeles, who also asked me for more story ideas and to even work on a story. I did that, thinking I was being considered for the job, only to then hear nothing about whether or not I was still being considered. While chasing down my story, though, I learned that another candidate was doing the same thing! Yes, that's right, they were using me for free labor under the guise of "considering" me for the job. Sleazy, sleazy, sleazy. When I asked outright whether I was still being considered for a job, the answer was "Oh, we are going with someone with more experience." Stay away from this dishonest organization!
- Can you tell me about your experience?
Editor
The interview was conducted over the phone and was very efficient. The interviewer asked great questions and provided candid responses. They gave an honest assessment of the job expectations and the workplace culture. The interviewer was very professional and showed sincere interest in my background as it related to the position available.
