First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Modell's Sporting Goods.
Assistant Manager
I applied online and after about a week, I got an email to schedule an interview. It took a bit to set up a date because the first one we picked got postponed due to a snowstorm, and then the interviewer was on vacation right after that. So, the interview finally happened two weeks after I got the initial email. I felt the interview went pretty well and that the interviewer and I really connected. He was pretty relaxed, and it felt more like a casual chat than a formal interview. The questions were mostly about my previous or current job roles and standard interview stuff, nothing too out there. Unfortunately, I guess he didn't think I was a good fit because I never heard back about whether I got the job, even after I emailed him for an update. It was pretty unprofessional to just leave me hanging like that.
- Can you tell me about your responsibilities in your last role?
- What led you to apply to Modell's?
Management Trainee
I had a Q&A session and then they reviewed my resume. We talked a lot about my past management experience and how it could apply to this role. It felt like a typical interview for a leadership job in retail. I got a call back later, but I had already accepted another job by then.
- Why are you a good fit for this position?
Assistant Manager
I found the job on Indeed.com and a recruiter reached out about a week later to schedule an interview. The first interview was with the recruiter and was pretty easy, mostly asking about my character. After that, I met with the district manager, who was really down-to-earth. We talked a lot about my past experience. My advice is to have some good questions ready to ask and to chat with people who are currently assistant managers. I got an offer within a week, pending a background check. The recruiter contacted me again within a week to go over the start date and what to wear. The whole process took about 5 weeks.
