Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Mitacs.
Business Development
The interview process had 3 stages. First, there was a general question about my background and experience. Second, there was a role play where I had to imagine meeting someone and marketing Mitacs to them in an elevator. I didn't do well in this stage. Third, I had an interview with the manager where I was supposed to present a PowerPoint.
- Can you tell me about your background and explain how it aligns with the requirements of this role?
- If you were in an elevator on your way back from an event and met someone, how would you pitch Mitacs to them?
Director of Business Development
The interviewers seemed inexperienced and unprepared for executive-level candidates, at times mistaking rudeness for focus. There were a lot of prospects for an 80-90k salary. Senior management should train junior team leaders because even candidates who aren't a fit can leave a lasting impression of the MITACS brand. A well-connected senior individual might still offer help or a referral for a non-profit after a respectful conversation.
- Can you tell me about your industry connections?
- What connections do you have with local post-secondary institutions?
Business Development
I was emailed about an opportunity and had an interview on MS Teams about a week later. The interview seemed okay, not great but not bad either. They said they'd let me know the next week if it was a yes or no. I followed up two weeks later, but got no response. I sent another email the following week, still nothing. I tried again the week after that, assuming maybe the person was on vacation, but still no reply. Even though I've found another job now, I was pretty annoyed at being ignored after they specifically said they'd update me, regardless of the outcome. It felt really unprofessional.
- What motivates you to want to join MITACS?
