Business Consultant
I was referred by my former manager, who wanted me to work for her again. The role was a level below my previous one due to leveling differences between companies, but she promised quick promotion, so I accepted. After sending my resume, the recruiter scheduled a phone screen for about a week later. The recruiter asked basic questions about my experience and salary expectations. I passed and then had my first interview with the EVP of Customer Success. Usually, I'd interview with my former manager, but to avoid conflict of interest, I interviewed with the EVP instead. I felt interviewing for my level with the EVP was overkill and might cause calibration issues since I seemed to be the only one she interviewed. During the interview, the EVP was a few minutes late and seemed distracted by a CEO email. I told her to take her time. She asked me to walk over my resume and asked a few behavioral questions. About 10 minutes in, she asked if I had questions, which was unusual so early on. I wondered if she was still distracted or if I had already failed. I asked her some questions, and then she asked more behavioral questions and asked if I had more questions. This back-and-forth felt a bit awkward.
- Can you walk me through your resume?
- What do you consider your greatest strengths?
- And what about your weaknesses?
Business Consultant
The interview process started with an HR call, then a meeting with the hiring manager, followed by a final round with a few individuals. After that, I had another call with the team to discuss a different role, then we talked about my expectations. There were a few more talks with various people, and then came the offer. It took a few weeks from when they expressed interest in making an offer until the offer actually arrived. During this waiting period, I was approached by other opportunities. Ultimately, I declined the offer due to uncompetitive base pay, a minimal benefits package (no 401k match, no HSA), no equity, no sign-on bonus, and no room for negotiation. Initially, I had a very positive outlook on the firm and its trajectory, but in the end, I felt they didn't truly value my contributions.
- Tell me about a time you did X.
- Can you share an instance where you demonstrated Y?
- Describe a situation where you accomplished Z.

The interview process was extremely unprofessional. The recruiter was dishonest and wasted my time. They should realize that attractive LinkedIn messages may get them a call, but they are wasting their time and mine when they embellish leveling, pay, and other variables through her messages.
