I sent in my application online. About six weeks later, they gave me an assignment to create dialogue in a text message style for a virtual tutor or chatbot. The task was to explain probability in a conversational manner and to come up with conceptual questions to gauge student comprehension. Three weeks after submitting that, I had a short phone interview. I was then extended a contract offer with a conditional payment structure based on revenue-sharing, calculated as a yearly percentage of the product's revenue over five years. On the surface, this sounds appealing: the more successful the product, the higher the pay. However, several hidden contract clauses nullified this incentive. Firstly, an earnings cap limits the total amount a contractor can receive, irrespective of the product's success, undermining the core idea of proportional revenue sharing. Secondly, a fixed sum was allocated for conditional payments, which might not be fully distributed to all contributors. Thirdly, if an author's content was removed before the year's end, they wouldn't get paid for it, even if students engaged with it throughout the year. These terms blend the worst aspects of both fixed salary/hourly pay and revenue-sharing models. Similar to fixed pay, there's a limit to earnings. Like revenue-sharing, there's a risk of not earning anything, yet without the benefit of proportional rewards for exceptional performance. My advice if offered a role: scrutinize the contract carefully and be prepared to walk away if you encounter these conditions.

The interview was online via Skype, which made sense since the company is in Israel. Setting it up was easy; I just picked a time from the CEO's calendar, we swapped Skype IDs, and he called me then. We chatted for about 15 minutes. He asked about my specialization and academic background. He also outlined the project and his goals for the next year. Then, he asked me to send in a writing sample.
