& Process

There were 2 rounds. The first was a technical phone screen. They asked questions about the job description and also some questions to test my critical thinking and thought process through a situation that I was unsure of. The next round was a presentation of a technical topic to a panel.

The interview process had 3 rounds. The first round was a phone call with the recruiter where they asked some general screening questions. The second round was an on-site interview. In this round, you explain your resume and past experiences, and then give a 15-minute technical presentation on a project you're proud of to a few engineers (1 manager, 2 senior). After the presentation, there's a design question: if you have a panel above a box, how would you rotate that panel to be 90 degrees. They want to know how you'd deploy it (motor vs. propulsive force), how you'd keep it at 90 degrees, and how your design would survive launch and space conditions. The interview felt pretty easy, with mostly surface-level or slightly more than surface-level questions about my presentation. Prepping like it's a SpaceX interview should be sufficient. I didn't proceed past the second round and didn't ask for feedback, though I did inquire about my application status and received an automated rejection email from workday. I also got to tour their office after the interview. Based on my observation, the office culture seems like a mental health crisis, and I couldn't see myself fitting in as a new grad. Also, avoid mentioning SpaceX or similar companies when interviewing, as it didn't seem to land well when I asked about the scope of their positions in comparison to other companies.

Had 2 phone screening interviews. The first was with the hiring manager who had great interpersonal skills. The second was with the Sr. production engineer who had unpolished mannerisms. The manager was more welcoming and had a broader sense of understanding in the industry, while the secondary interviewer's perspective was more insular due to limited experience in the industry. This second interviewer did not follow my availability schedule and arrived late. The odds were not stacked in my favor. Overall, it seemed like a young crew of engineers with basic on the job training. There seemed to be another candidate in the pipeline so the interview process was rushed.

I got a phone interview thanks to a friend. It was supposed to be 30 mins but went for 50 mins because we were talking a lot. It felt like it went well. The interviewer said they were looking at other people and would let me know about the next steps next week. I thought I'd get a second interview and was happy about it. But then a few days later, I got a LinkedIn message that my friend got the job. The next day, I got an automated rejection. It felt like they just gave me that interview as a formality because they already picked someone. I know Millennium Space Systems has multiple interview stages like phone screenings, in-person interviews, panel discussions, and director-level talks. Since my friend got the job, they must have been in the final stages. It feels like they didn't really consider me. But I'm really happy for my friend!
