Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Michigan Technological University.
Research Assistant
I had a phone interview for a research institute position in Ann Arbor, MI. The call was from Texas, and it was pretty easy and helpful. They asked about my basic skills and when I could start. They were already behind schedule on the project I was being hired for, so my availability was super important. They didn't ask any difficult questions, mostly just reviewed my skills and confirmed my start date. I was offered the job later than they initially said, but I accepted it.

Research Assistant
It really depends on the professor and the funding available, but usually the projects are quite good, offering huge growth potential. You'll learn all the skills you need in university and through the projects themselves. The interview is basically to check if you have the background skills needed for the projects the department has.
- How would you rate your research skills?
Research Assistant
I met with my advisor to discuss the project goals, overall concept, and timeline. After observing my work quality for a semester, my advisor decided to hire me for his research assistant position on a $300,000 WaterReuse funded project.
