First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Michigan Technological University.
Admissions Manager
It started in late 2016 when I was referred by some employees for the job. Then, in January 2017, I had a casual chat with the Director of Admissions and another key person from another department who used to do this job. After that, I was asked to have an informal meeting with someone on the team who lived near me. They both said these weren't interviews, but really, if you're meeting important people who can affect your hiring, the interview's already begun. After that meeting, the Director sent me the job details, a schedule for my campus visit, and a presentation I needed to create for potential students and their families. I had two weeks to get it ready. I was on campus all day, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. I met with two different groups: one from my department and another group of department heads I'd work with. I had lunch with current students, toured the campus, drafted a plan for how I'd reach out and recruit students for the rest of the 2016-2017 school year, and finished with a 10-15 minute presentation. I even had breakfast off-site before my main interview with the Director's boss. The breaks were brief, and I used them to call my family who came with me. I later found out it was not well-received that I used my cell phone during breaks, and it was noted as a concern for my job performance. Even though I felt it went well and the students and department heads gave me positive feedback, I apparently didn't connect with or convince the Director that I could do the job, even temporarily. The Director's boss told me that the Director decided not to fill the position temporarily for the rest of the year and would open it up to the public for the 2017-2018 school year.
- Imagine you planned an event for prospective students and their families, expecting 20 RSVPs, but only two attended. Would you see this as a failure, and what would you do in that situation?
Student Consultant
Three people asked me questions about my experience. The questions were generally pretty straight-forward. Each person sat at a table around the room in a classroom in the library. They understood that you were a student and probably did not have a lot of experience as a student consultant/IT help desk person. They asked why you wanted the job and what experience you have helping people with technology.
- What experience do you have with the Canvas Learning Management system?
- Can you tell me why you are interested in this position?
- What experience do you have assisting people with technology-related issues?
Research Assistant
It really depends on the professor and the funding available, but usually the projects are quite good, offering huge growth potential. You'll learn all the skills you need in university and through the projects themselves. The interview is basically to check if you have the background skills needed for the projects the department has.
- How would you rate your research skills?
Team Leader
I attended an info session and completed some short writing questions, then moved onto the interview. It was a pretty standard interview with two interviewers, one staff member and one student employee.
- Can you describe your most challenging experience?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- Tell me about your leadership experience.
