First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Merrill.
Product Manager
Went through a really intense paperwork and background check phase. They basically wanted my entire history for the last ten years, and I messed up by forgetting a job I had for two days when I was 16. That almost disqualified me, so definitely make sure you put down absolutely everything you've ever done!
- Why didn't you have a prospect book?
- Can you explain your work history for the past decade?
- Did you include that job from when you were 16 that you only worked for two days?
Product Manager
So, first there was a phone screening. Then, I had to take this online exam called the FIAT, which is supposed to take 2-3 hours but I finished it in about 1 hour 15 minutes. It was mostly general math, some TVM, and a few economics questions. If you pass that, you get a phone interview with a recruiter. After that, I went into the office to interview with a Financial Advisor. They told me more about the job and asked some general questions. Then, another Financial Advisor from a different team interviewed me. It was cool to see the difference between working solo or on a team and helped me think about my own strategy. I was then asked to create a business plan. After I submitted it, I had a final in-person interview with the complex director. The whole thing took a little over a month from when I applied.
- Were the questions pretty standard for a financial services interview?
Product Manager
I applied on the BofA website and a recruiter called me. Then, they set up an interview with a manager, which I passed. After that, I took two tests: an easy math test and a personality test. Then there was a 3 on 1 interview, and finally, an interview with the MD.
- Can you summarize your key strengths in just two words?
- How will pursuing the CFA impact your focus on this role, as it might be a distraction?
