First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Mercy Health System.
Patient Registration
Mercy has a few different steps in an interview. They first or second (for some) will have a phone interview and screening. Secondly, they will have a face to face interview. Third, they will do a peer interview/panel. This may be someone from another section in the hospital, management, and they may not even know what you do when you work/how you do your job. Finally, they may or may not offer you the job. For me, I got a call three months later that I got the job. Remember to be patient and get a hold of someone's business card (whether it be HR or the person that interviewed you). Don't give in and assume that you didn't get it, keep pestering them about whether or not a final decision was made.
- What unique contribution would you make to the company, and how would patients directly observe its impact?
Service Manager
I put in my application online back in August right after the job was posted and I gave them a call to ask some questions. I got an automated response saying I'd be contacted soon. I didn't hear anything back, but then I saw the job was advertised again. I called again and was told they didn't get enough applicants so they re-posted it, but they were still interested. In October, they called me and asked me to do an online interview. A week later, I was invited for a face-to-face interview. I found out I didn't get the job a week after that when they advertised the position for a third time. I thought this was really unprofessional. I asked for feedback, but the person giving it to me hadn't even interviewed me, so the feedback was useless and again, very unprofessional. I wouldn't suggest applying for jobs with Mercy. I really think how you treat everyone who applies says a lot about your organization, not just the people you hire.
- No questions were asked, which was unexpected given the nature of the position.
Registered Nurse
I had a lot of trouble getting through to anyone real with the HR or online application. I kept getting a rejection email within hours. I called HR multiple times to ask why I wasn't being considered anymore, and the HR Hiring Team Representative told me "the hiring managers don't specify why they don't pick someone and if they only say they will accept 100 applicants you will automatically get a rejection letter." I asked, "and if one of those 100 applicants are not qualified or pass background checks then what?" The HR Rep responded, "you'd have to reapply." I then mentioned that "I have reapplied and the system tells me I already applied for the position and it was determined that (I) was no longer being looked at as a candidate due to certain reasons and I should consider to search other openings within Mercy." The HR Rep said, "the hiring manager usually keeps resumes on file for 90 days or so and if they are interested they would contact me." I then pointed out, "that's odd because after 2 or 3 weeks I will see a "new posting" on my job search boards." The HR Rep finished by saying, "I guess you'll just have to keep trying."
- Can you tell me your three best and three worst qualities?
Podiatrist
The process involved site visits, an HR meeting, and a discussion with leadership. It was a relaxed overview of the health system, including facility tours and meeting staff over lunch. The people were easy-going. The process was simple, but the clinics and hospital are in rural locations, which might be challenging for people from the city. Driving is necessary in these communities and between the hospitals and clinics.
- Why did you consider Mercy?
