Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Mercer.
Senior Associate
First, there was an Excel analytical test to check analytical and Excel formula skills. Then, there were multiple unstructured interviews with leaders discussing relevant experience, qualifications, fit, expectations, culture, and career progression.
- What experience do you think makes you a good fit for this job?
Associate
I applied online and heard back from a recruiter about two weeks later for a phone screen. After that, I had a few more phone interviews with different employees (associate to partner levels). Then, I was invited for a half-day of interviews at the NYC office with four people (Sr. Associate to Sr. Partner levels). I got an offer a few days after the in-person interviews. The process was pretty straightforward. One interviewer really dug into one of my past work experiences, so be ready to talk about your resume and give specific examples of how your past work fits the role. Standard questions were asked: Tell me about a time when..., Strengths & weaknesses, Walk me through your resume, and Why Mercer?. I also did a mini case study where I was given some internal labor market data and had to explain my thought process on what I saw, its implications, and what other data I'd need.
- How do you work on self-improvement during your own time?
- Have you done any business development before?
Associate
It was through campus recruiting. The first round was a mix of behavioral and a case study. The behavioral part was pretty chill, the interviewer asked about hypothetical scenarios and how I'd respond, not like the typical 'tell me about a time when...' questions. The second round had two behavioral questions, two case studies, and a project walkthrough. The behavioral questions were really focused on my personal experiences. One technical case was very finance-focused, and the other case was more about high-level strategy. Most of the cases were about healthcare.
- The technical case study covered finance concepts like CAPM, WACC, cost of capital/debt, and beta.
